...are getting married!
He shyly liked her on OKCupid; she liked him back, then sent this message:
The tree-falls-in-a-forest of online dating: If two shy homebodies 'like' each other on OkCupid but neither person sends a message, was it really a match?
Their first date was on a tiny rooftop bar in midtown Manhattan. True to form, she tripped while walking to get a cab; the scar on her knee was visible for the better part of a year.
They first said "I love you" to each other the morning after the 2016 election.
A little over a year after that, they moved in together on the Upper East Side.
The following March, they got a cat.
And then, on June 29th, 2018, the day after her birthday, he got down on one knee in Central Park and asked her to marry him.
Both the ceremony and reception will be held in the bookstore. Housing Works is a New York City charity dedicated to ending the twin crises of homelessness and AIDS. The store will be closed to the public for the duration of the wedding, but the staff will be happy to ring up a purchase if you see something you like on the shelves!
Housing Works Bookstore is located in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, near the Bleeker Street (6 line), Broadway-Lafayette Street (B/D/F/M line), and Prince Street (R/W line) subway stations.
Once the reception ends at 11 PM, we'll head over to Sweetwater Social just a few blocks away, where we'll have some tables set aside for everyone to continue mingling until we just can't stand upright anymore.
We have three "official" hotels we've negotiated discount rates at; two close to the venue, the other across the Hudson in Jersey City. There are many, many places to stay in and around New York City, however, so don't feel like you have to stay at any of these if you find something more convenient for you.PUBLIC Hotel
The PUBLIC is the closest to the venue, and is a super-hip upscale hotel in the heart of SoHo. Our group code is MCNA191004. You can also reserve by calling 212-735-6000 and saying you want to reserve a room with the "McNaughton-Ashby Wedding". Rooms start at $385/night for a single Queen. The discounted rate for the PUBLIC ends Friday, September 13, 2019. After that, the room discount will be subject to availability.Hotel on Rivington
The Hotel on Rivington is slightly further away from the venue and isn't quite as hip, but still classy and warm. Our group code is 1910ASHMC. You can also reserve by calling 212-475-2600 and giving our names. Rooms start at $295/night for a single King. The discounted rate for Hotel on Rivington ends Friday, September 5, 2019. After that, our block has expired and will no longer be available for booking (although rooms may still be available at market rate).Residence Inn by Marriott Jersey City
Just a short train ride under the Hudson River away in Jersey City, the Marriott is, well, a standard hotel. Our "Corporate/Promo/SET#" is W14; it's a floating 15% off the price at time of booking. You can also reserve by calling 201-222-5500 and using that code.
Housing Works is easily accessible by foot from PUBLIC or Hotel on Rivington (about a seven or thirteen minute walk along Houston Street, respectively) and by train from the Marriott (about 40 minutes and $5.50 by taking the PATH to World Trade Center, then the N/R subway line to the Prince Street Station).
If you're flying into New York, there are three airport options. If you're staying at the Marriott, we recommend flying into Newark (EWR). For the Manhattan hotels, we recommend flying into LaGuardia (LGA), followed by JFK.
If you are driving, the only hotel with parking (off site for $28/day) is the Marriott. Parking in New York City has an abysmal reputation, and it is entirely earned. We strongly suggest not attempting to bring a car into Manhattan.
According to our Googling, the level of "dressiness" we're going for is somewhere between "nice," "dressy," and "semi-semi-formal." The wedding party will be wearing suits and floor-length dresses. A tuxedo is probably too much, but if you think you can pull if off without upstaging the groom, we're not going to stop you.
Our wedding hashtag is #AshbyTiesTheMcNaught. For those of you who don't know what that means, it's a handy way for everyone to see photos from the wedding on social media. All you have to do is include "#AshbyTiesTheMcNaught" in the photo description when posting on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Please do this so we can find all the great candid photos people take!
